18th Annual Orange Beach Billfish Classic
The Wharf hosts the 18th annual Orange Beach Billfish Classic this year on May 18th-22nd. The OBBC is the first major offshore tournament of the 2016 Gulf Coast tournament fishing season and is the first of the five tournaments qualifying for the Gulf Coast Triple Crown Championship Series. The teams with the best chances of winning begin by fishing the OBBC-the winners receive a trophy and are named the best fishing team of the year. Easily accessible to some of the best offshore fishing grounds, Orange Beach is home to a large fleet of sport fishing boats and some of the best fishing crews in the Gulf of Mexico. The tournament attracts big boats and top fishing teams from all over the Gulf Coast. Offshore fishing is hot this time of year and the boats head out at noon on Thursday to fish for blue marlin, tuna, wahoo and mahi.
Over the course of the four day event the crews, owners and participants enjoy a kickoff party Wednesday night and the Awards Brunch on Sunday morning. The highlight of the tournament is the Friday and Saturday night weigh in as the boats line up to weigh their catch at the scales at the end of Main Street in the heart of The Wharf complex. Thousands of spectators gather to watch the teams bring in their gamefish and blue marlin to compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
The Orange Beach Billfish Classic was formed in 1998 for the express purpose of providing financial support for organizations that speak effectively for all recreational fishermen. The OBBC quickly became a top event on the Gulf Coast tournament circuit and serves as an important donor to The Billfish Foundation, an organization dedicated to worldwide billfish conservation. Over the years the OBBC has donated over $625,000.00 to The Billfish Foundation and other conservation organizations.
