August Tenant of the Month: Chef Jason Ramirez of Villaggio Grille

Every month, we’re spotlighting one of our tenants here at The Wharf. This month is the award-winning head chef of Villaggio Grille, Chef Jason Ramirez. Step into his kitchen to learn more about his process, then come pay him a visit for a fantastic meal!

Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Moreland, GA.

How long has your restaurant been at The Wharf?
Villaggio has been at The Wharf for 12 years.

What is your culinary background?
I am a graduate of Johnson and Whales University in Charleston, South Carolina. I took to cooking at an early age with my grandparents. Pulling influences from my roots of Southern Georgia and my Hispanic background, I was exposed to many flavors and styles of cooking from the start of my culinary path.

What other jobs have you held in the restaurant industry?
Like most seasoned chefs, I began as a dishwasher when I was a teenager. I’ve been working in the food industry ever since, including line cook, server, and eventually management roles.

How did you end up on Alabama’s Gulf Coast?
I worked at restaurants in Atlanta and Birmingham after culinary school, and then I found my way to the Gulf to work for Lane and Ginny Gilbert as the Executive Chef of Gilbey’s Restaurant Group.

Who’s the most noteworthy person that’s eaten at your restaurant?
I can’t say too much, but I will say I have a love for motorcycles and had the privilege of cooking for Peter Fonda.

What do you love about competing in culinary competitions?
I love competition. It was an honor to win first place at The Wharf Uncorked in 2016 and the National Shrimp Festival in 2017, and I’ve enjoyed my two years in the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off. I learn a lot from every competition I enter.

What inspires you to be a great chef?
I always pursue to build on my culinary knowledge by exploring and learning about different cultural aspects and cuisine every day.

What are some of your favorite hobbies?
I love boating, camping and traveling.

Auburn or Alabama?
Go Georgia Bulldawgs!
