A Sneak Peek at this Summer’s Fishing Tournaments hosted at The Wharf

Fishing seems to be one of the few universal unifiers of our time. Young or old, boy or girl, the act of casting a single line into an infinity of blue water surpasses age, gender and nationality.

Not only is the art of fishing loved by participants, but it’s quite the spectator sport as well. The Gulf of Mexico has become one of the top, if not the top, environments for recreational fishing over the past four decades, and The Wharf will serve as the host destination for several of the season’s big tournaments.

Kids Win at The Wharf

Our marina has been buzzing since April, following the inauguration of the first-ever Kids Win event. This fun-filled tournament serves as the perfect platform for many young beginners to become better acquainted with the native waters, and for some it’s an introduction to fishing altogether! A whopping 138 kids from all over the area entered and $1,000 was raised for the Baldwin County Education Coalition.

The second annual Kids Win event will be held in April of 2018. We’re aiming to make this tournament a yearly tradition for families near and far!

Orange Beach Billfish Classic

Marshaling in the official tournament season this weekend, the Orange Beach Billfish Classic will be the first leg of the Gulf Coast Triple Crown. Much like NASCAR, the GCTC is a points series consisting of five sanctioned tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico, beginning and ending at The Wharf.

Now in its 19th year, the OBBC has already made history, selling out completely by late March, with an increased total of 55 boats! Not only is this tournament a family-run operation, it is unique in the fact that 100% of all proceeds are donated to conservation organizations. Since 1998, the OBBC has contributed well over half a million dollars to The Billfish Foundation, setting the standard as the world’s largest donor.

Boats will go underway tomorrow and begin the hunt around noon. Sights will be set on tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo and of course blue and white marlin, amongst other species. Make sure you don’t miss the weigh-ins; you’ll have two opportunities to witness the magic on Main Street (Marlin Circle) both Friday and Saturday!

Kyser Miree Memorial Fishing Tournament

On the heels of the OBBC, June 10th marks the start of the 7th annual Kyser Miree Memorial Fishing Tournament. This is the second year it’s being held at The Wharf.

Created in honor of the late Christopher Kyser Miree, the profits from this tournament assist several Mobile-based child welfare organizations, such as St. Mary’s Home and Wilmer Hall Children’s Home, in addition to the Kyser Miree Scholarship Fund.

Anglers will embark at daybreak in search of speckled trout, king mackerel, redfish and red snapper, a seasonal favorite. The weigh station opens at 10am and is open to the public with no admission fee, as well as the awards ceremony after 5pm. Come on down anytime and enjoy some rousing entertainment, all for a worthy cause!

Blue Marlin Grand Championship

By the time July 11th rolls around, you will be nice and warmed up for “The Greatest Show in Sportfishing,” otherwise known as the Blue Marlin Grand Championship. As the final tournament in the Triple Crown Series, this remarkable display of competitive drive has been named one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society.

The Blue Marlin Grand Championship has raised over $85,000 in the last three years for the St. Jude Children’s Research Center, and no doubt that number will grow this year. Additionally, significant changes have been made in the spirit of conservation and preservation, including increasing the minimum length for Blue Marlin.

Local NBC 15 will be broadcasting the Saturday evening weigh-ins live from 7 to 9pm, which you can also watch live on the tournament’s official website, as well as on other partnership networks. And if you’re there in person, you may get the chance to have your face shown in over 3.5 million households, domestically and even internationally!

The cherry on this sundae? Florida Georgia Line will be performing to a packed house at The Wharf Amphitheater Friday and Saturday night as part of the 2017 C Spire concert series, further electrifying this already red-letter weekend. Plenty of crossover tailgating possibilities!

Whether you hook on or look on, this tournament season at The Wharf is guaranteed to be worth the bait—er, wait!
